As you will see from my biographical note, I have academic qualifications in Art History and Literature, and have spent fifty years working in Opera. What I am offering, however, is less an expert account of any of these fields, so much as a series of interdisciplinary excursions into the History of Ideas, in particular how different arts may reflect the spirit of their time, or certain powerful notions may span the centuries.
The links below lead to screens that will serve as a pictorial prospectus for each course; in some cases, a button at bottom center will access one or more additional screens. For obvious reasons, most of these are illustrated by works of art or theatrical productions. In fact, though, all courses except the first two will also contain music, and those in the Potpourri section will look at literature, architecture, and other media as appropriate.
See the lower right on each screen for a button to enlarge the text:
Note that, because of the 2020–22 Covid pandemic, the classes with dates in pink were given via Zoom, and thus may not have been confined to the members in the center listed.
