Britain and America have vastly different political histories with France, yet both share an ambivalent attitude towards French culture, which is seen both as the epitome of sophistication and the stuff of scandal. This course will trace the sometimes-troubled, sometimes-amicable relations between France and other countries (America and Britain for sure, but also Germany, Italy, and Spain) and how these have been reflected in taste, culture, and the arts.
