So-called genre is the painting of the anonymous people around us. No gods and goddesses, no Bible stories, no noble patrons or elevated subjects, simply the depiction of everyday life. But what makes one scene interesting and another not? What moral, political, or social agendas may lurk beneath the surface? And when photography comes along, does it preempt the role of painting? How does it change our way of seeing? What is there left for art?
