We all know the myth of the artist laboring to express his vision, gaining recognition only after his death.
But what of the opposite—artists, composers, and writers who become hugely popular in their own times? Did
they have to sacrifice integrity for fame? Does popularity then equate to oblivion now? Millais and Puccini
are examples with opposite outcomes, but there are many more.
